Hello!

Thank you for your email. Initial determination is based on the information provided in the admission application. If it is not able to determine applicant-student as resident, they may petition for reclassification for any upcoming term when they believe they qualify. Student may find instructions on our Residency FAQ  for logging into  UTD Student Center and submitting the Core Residency Questionnaire and your supporting documentation if they would like a review.

Below is the email that we send to students willing to apply for in-state residency which you may find helpful.

Please find below different ways you or a parent (if you are a dependent) may qualify for Texas Residency (item 1) or show intent to establish and maintain domicile in the state of Texas for tuition purposes (items 2, 3, 4, or 5). Those choosing to establish and maintain domicile are also required to be under an eligible visa or citizenship status for 12 consecutive months while doing so.

Please Note: Merely living in Texas does not guarantee in-state tuition. Documents used in the establishment and maintenance of domicile in Texas will depend on what path you wish to follow. Documents such as utility bills, offer letters, lease agreements, a driver’s license, tax returns, etc. will provide support to a claim of physical presence in Texas but do NOT establish domicile in Texas.

Texas High School Pathway:

  1. Graduate from a public or accredited private high school in Texas or receive the equivalent of a high school diploma in Texas and maintain a residence continuously in Texas for the 36 months immediately preceding the date of graduation or receipt of the diploma equivalent and the 12 months preceding the Census Day of the academic semester in which you will enroll at UT Dallas. For the review process, please submit an official (sealed) final High School transcript, including your graduation date, and a copy of a signed & notarized Residency Affidavit if you are not a U.S. citizen or do not hold a Permanent Resident card.

Show intent to Establish and Maintain Domicile by:

  1. Gainful employment in Texas for at least 12 consecutive months prior to the Census Day of the desired term. For the review process, please submit a signed employment verification letter from your supervisor with the following: company letterhead, location, start and end date, and hours worked per week (must be at least 20 hours). In addition, employment conditioned on student status, such as work-study, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships, cannot be used to meet the gainful employment requirement.
  1. Ownership of residential real property in Texas. For the review process, please submit a copy of the Warranty Deed/Deed of Trust and utility statements (electric, cable, etc.) for the residential property owned in Texas. The deed and utility statements must show at least 12 consecutive months of ownership and evidence of residence prior to the Census Day of the term you seek to enroll at UT Dallas.
  1. Own and customarily manage a business in Texas. For the review process, please submit evidence reflecting the establishment and operation of the business in Texas for 12 consecutive months prior to the Census Day of the term you seek to enroll, such as receipts, ledgers, contracts, and/or 12 consecutive months of the business utility statements.
  1. Marriage to a Person (for 12 consecutive months) who has established and maintained domicile in Texas. For the review process, please submit a copy of your marriage certificate with your spouse’s documentation that supports his/her establishment and maintenance of domicile in Texas for 12 consecutive months prior to the Census Day of the term you seek to enroll.

Please understand that submitting these documents does not guarantee approval, these are just the documents that will help us make our determination, and it is possible we will request other documentation before our final decision. This information is due by Census Day of the term for which you are applying for in-state residency.

Please be aware that you are responsible for all tuition and fees assessed until you are notified that any change has been made.

Hello,                                                                                                                                                Tue 2025-04-15 16:35

Thank you for your email. If a student qualifies for in-state tuition because they graduated from a Texas high school after 36 months of attendance, they are required to reside in Texas for 12 consecutive months prior to the semester in which they would enroll to maintain their resident status.

We suggest  to submit a complete Core Residency Questionnaire (pdf) via UTD Student Center if they met such requirement of residing in Texas for 12 months prior to your desired term, so we can proceed with the review.

We will need some evidence of physical presence in Texas for the past 12 months prior to census day of their desired term.

You may find a list of documents that may provide support to a claim of physical residence in Texas here: https://registrar.utdallas.edu/residence/residency-documentation/.
